Myomectomy

WHAT IS MYOMECTOMY?

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids, also called “leiomyomas”. These non-cancerous growths are commonly found in the uterus. The surgeon's goal during myomectomy is to remove the fibroids that cause symptoms and reconstruct the uterus. Unlike a hysterectomy, which removes the entire uterus, myomectomy removes only the fibroids and leaves the uterus.

Women who undergo myomectomy present improvements in the symptoms of fibroids, among them, a heavy decrease of menstrual bleeding and pelvic pressure. There are patients who present with boxes of infertility caused by uterine fibroids, in which it is used myomectomy.

HOW DO YOU PERFORM A MYOMECTOMY?

The technique used to perform the removal of uterine fibroids depends on the size and the amount of the same.

  • If the fibroids are intramural and in great amount, myomectomy should be performed by an open surgery.
  • If the fibroids or myomas, are the subserosal and in a small amount (1 or 2), myomectomy can be performed by laparoscopy.
  • If you are submucosal, then is performed by hysteroscopy using a resectoscope.
